Dominic’s Story – 25 Ways Thera Has Made An Impact

Posted 14/01/2025

Dominic is supported by Thera South West. Over the past few years, Dominic and his support team have worked on increasing the number of sporting activities he gets involved in.

Dominic had not been doing as many activities since the COVID-19 pandemic and was keen to try some new things with the support of his staff team.

Back in 2022, Dominic started attending football and basketball sessions for people with a learning disability at his local leisure centre. Attending these groups has given Dominic more confidence and enabled him to improve his social skills. His support team had never seen him run before, so to see Dominic participating fully was a massive step forward.

Now in 2024, Dominic still attends his basketball group and a member of his support team in Thera South West had this to say:

I am certain this is the highlight of the week, he is always more illuminated than usual, especially in basketball where on arrival without any prompting he runs a couple of circuits of the court before the playing commences! He is often in the last 5 at the end where they do the last man standing challenge and has on several occasions actually won it and been the last man standing!

Dominic has started playing Boccia twice a week, which he actively takes part in and looks forward to attending. He has also started meeting a group of friends for bowling. His Support Worker added:

At bowling they are constantly laughing, fist bumping and high-fiving each other.

This is great to see as historically Dom has found socialising with his peers quite difficult.

The progress in Dom’s sporting ability and confidence is clear to see and we can’t wait to hear what he does in the future!
