Don first joined Unity Works on our accessible apprentice programme. Following a successful year which culminated with him achieving an NVQ Level 2, Don secured work in a variety of different catering and barista roles including at a primary school and office buildings including at large bank in the City.
During the pandemic, Don unfortunately lost his job but was proactive about looking for a new one. He reached out to Unity Works to see if they had any roles available and with the support from our supported employment team, he successfully applied for a role at our flagship social enterprise café in Victoria.
Don swiftly became a popular member of the front of house team where he makes delicious coffees and serves up an array of breakfasts and lunch throughout the day as well as working events. He also supports and mentor trainees enrolled on training placements in the café.
When asked what he likes most about his job, Don says:
Everyday you look around [at] the view. It never gets boring!
Reflecting of his time as an apprentice, Don noted that it had helped with his “panini making and coffee making skills”. He came to the role having never worked in a front of house role before but swiftly learnt the skills he still uses to this day.
