A staff team at Thera South West have helped the young men and women they support to build a home gym in order to help them stay active and promote good physical and mental health.
Alice, John, and Mark share a home and are supported by Thera South West. As young individuals they have lots of energy that requires exertion. Alice, John, and Mark very much liked the idea of building a gym in their own home.
Leandra, a Project Manager at Thera Trust, donated some gym equipment to them which their staff team set up in the garage. They now have a rowing machine, an exercise bike, a treadmill, and some weights. The staff team created gym passes for them to make it feel more like a public gym and encourage the activity. The gym gives them all an outlet to burn off energy, channel frustrations, and build healthy mental and physical habits.
They also have an art room which allows them to explore their creative and artistic sides. This has been proven to help people regulate their emotions, and promotes good mental health. Promoting positive mental and physical habits through Positive Behavioural Support has become more common in support work over recent years with people acknowledging the benefits it has.
