Thera East Anglia Breaks Down Barriers at Reverse Jobs Fair

Posted 16/07/2024

Thera East Anglia hosted a Reverse Job Fair to break down barriers to paid employment for people with a learning disability. The event also highlighted how valuable people with a learning disability are in the workforce.

People with a learning disability frequently face barriers to paid employment. In 2022, research revealed that the number of people with a learning disability in paid employment was 4.8%, when 65% of people with a learning disability want to be in work. As a result, Thera has a strong focus on championing supported employment, so that more people with a learning disability can enter paid work and live the lives they choose.

Thera East Anglia is especially championing this through their Reverse Job Fair, which was held in Peterborough last month. The event introduced people with a learning disability to local employers. The aim was to show that with the right support, people with a learning disability make valuable contributions to workplaces, just like everyone else.

The event started with presentations from Terri Dumont, Supported Employment Manager for Thera East Anglia, and some of the employers that were in attendance. The presentations helped to set the tone for the day, making both employers and the people we support feel more relaxed when meeting and speaking with each other.

Many different employers were in attendance who were all eager to meet the people we support, which helped create a vibrant atmosphere. Discussions began to flow, and everyone really enjoyed being around one another!

The event was a huge success with the results speaking for themselves. Three of the people we support secured interviews! The impression made on employers was invaluable, with many telling us the event had changed their perspective. Even employers that did not have any jobs available were eager to let Thera East Anglia know when any vacancies became available.

In post-event surveys, 100% of employers said they enjoyed the event, would attend one again and would recommend the event to others. The event was also described as a ‘breath of fresh air’ and ‘well-paced’.

The people we support as potential employees also enjoyed the event. In our post-event surveys, 100% said they would attend again, enjoyed their time and felt supported throughout the event.

The massive success of the event has meant that ideas are already being made to run similar events in the future so watch this space!

A massive well done to Terri and the Thera East Anglia Team for continuing to break down barriers between people with a learning disability and employment. We also would like to thank all the local employers who attended and supported the event. Huge congratulations and best of luck to those who secured an interview!

Together we can reduce the learning disability employment gap.
