Posted 03/02/2025

From supported intern to a paid role in the space of a few months, Troy has made his mark working at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust - Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Troy is a young man who swiftly progressed from a supported intern at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust – Queen Elizabeth Hospital back in September 2024 to becoming a part time member of staff all in the space of 3 months. Prior to joining the supported internship programme at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Troy was studying sports at college. He joined the programme to gain experience in a professional work environment and to get additional support in updating his CV and interview prep.

Before starting his first rotation, Troy completed the ISS (NHS facilities contractor) training book which covered topics such as as cross contamination, use of PPE and food safety. Following this, Troy’s first rotation was at back-of-house with the ISS team where he prepped food packs for hospital patients. Working alongside a mentor who showed Troy the ropes allowed him to pick up tasks more quickly. He swiftly moved on to printing orders and packing his own food packs for patients using the checklist his job coach prepped for him to support him with the task.

At the end of his first rotation, a paid role opened up as a Back of House Patient Catering Operative and with the support of his job coach and tutor, Troy successfully secured the role! Of getting the job Troy said:

I have never worked a proper job before so I am taking this opportunity as a stepping stone to my career. I might even be able to get a driving job with ISS.

Troy is now just over a month into his new role. Of his new role he said:

I am enjoying it a lot. Now that I am staff. the team rely even more on me and it makes me feel responsible. I have been given a lot of overtime and even work weekends in a two-man team which means the manager has confidence and trust in me.
